Gentle Beast Bullies
GBB’s is a small kennel located in Petersburg, Virginia. We have dedicated our program to producing the finest quality of Olde English Bulldogges. All of our breedings are done with the primary goal of maintaining good physical health, temperament, and a BULLY STYLE. Our bulldogges breath freely, whelp freely, and are less prone to hip problems. All of or dogs are socialized with children and other animals, at an early age. Our Bulldogges are not fighting dogs, and will not be sold to anyone who gives us the impression of wanting a fighting dog. The primary traits of our sire’s and dam’s are being smart, beautiful, powerful, athletic, tough guardian’s when needed, and GENTLE.
GBB’s Foundation Breedings
GBB’s is starting a foundation OEB program, using some of the concepts, and principles utilized by the founder David leavit.
David Leavit “The OEB Founder”:
"In 1971, he started the project of breeding a dog with the looks of the 18th century Bulldog. He had become disenchanted with English Bulldogs, due to breeding and breathing problems. He also discovered that they didn’t look like their ancestors, who were healthier and less extreme."
"He didn’t want the temperament of the original Bulldog. He strived to create a loving bulldog. They were required to show courage, and determination, without being overly aggressive. He found that he couldn’t count on buyers to get their dogs under good obedience control. In his words: "If I have to make a mistake, it must be on the friendly side, and if someone wants their dog to be sharper, all it takes is bit of training. I’d rather teach a friendly dog to bite, then vice versa."
He used a line-breeding scheme, developed for cattle at Ohio State University. He started with 3 unrelated dogs, two males and one female. Female pups from the first cross were bred to the second male. From this point, females were bred back to uncles, each generation. He had two unrelated schemes started, so future outcrosses would be possible. He used breeds that all have old Bulldog in their background. His dogs were half English Bulldog, and the other half Bullmastiff, Pit Bull, and American Bulldog. The process of getting the dogs to match the old depictions was actually rapid due to the breeds used, and a dogs’ short gestation period. He tried to get on to the next generation as quickly as possible, to make genetic progress and get consistent results. By 1995, David leavit was up to the eighth and ninth generations on the two lines.
